I’m away on maternity leave in April and May, which means that our first two workshops will be pre-recorded and sent directly to your inbox to enjoy. I’ll be returning to live teaching in June!

Archetypal Encounters: Hekate

Explore the archetypal themes of the liminal goddess

In April, we will explore the dark mysteries and liminal realms of the goddess Hekate through a Jungian and mythic lens, reflecting on her many psychological functions. We’ll work with her archetypal forms and key symbols as a guide through our current transitions, initiations, transformations, and underworld journeys.

Our focus includes:

• Hekate’s archetypal themes and psychological functions as Great Mother, Sorceress, Psychopomp, and Crone

• Her key symbols: key, torch, crossroads, and dog

• How Hekate can help us navigate liminal states, change, and inner transformation

Synchronicity

Learn to recognize and interpret synchronicity in your life

In May, we will explore Jung’s theory of synchronicity, where inner psychic states and outer events meaningfully align without direct cause. We’ll work with synchronicity as an expression of the unus mundus (one world) and as the bridge between psyche and matter, learning how to interpret these moments as signals from the unconscious within the individuation process.

Our focus includes:

• Using synchronicity to orient and deepen the individuation process

• Recognizing when synchronicities are occurring in your life and what they are reflecting about the current moment in time

• How to interpret synchronicities symbolically and practically for insight and guidance

Court Cards

Meet the archetypal personalities of the tarot

In June, we will study the court cards as psychic configurations that reveal distinct modes of being and patterns of expression within the psyche. We’ll explore each card in depth, examining their psychological undercurrents and how they emerge in readings and inner work.

Our focus includes:

• Meeting each court card as an archetypal personality or psychic pattern

• Understanding the court card’s unique psychological dynamics and expressions

• How to interpret each court card with nuance, clarity, and depth in readings

Yesterday, we gathered for an archetypal deep dive into elemental dream symbols and their link to alchemy. This is the perfect primer if you’re curious to begin your alchemical studies and sharpen your dreamwork skills.

I’m heading on maternity leave soon (you can read about that here), so live classes are on pause till June. However! the monthly membership experience will continue with pre-recorded workshops alongside the Oracle and Q&A threads.

There was a time in my early studies of tarot where I felt quite mystified by the whole process. Although there was always an allure and great sense of potency when I picked up a deck, I typically ran up against frustrating limitations.

The reliance I had on the guidebook and looking up definitions…

Drawing a blank as I attempted to gather insight and meaning from a reading…

A sense of overwhelm when there were too many cards to interpret…

I always felt as if I was lacking, wondering when I would arrive at a place of comfort and ease. Then, one fateful day, a friend of mine asked me to pull some cards and read for them. Diving head first, I agreed, and found myself staring down a spread of cards and a rising panic in my chest.

I took a deep breath and just began talking. I entered into this strange liminal state. Here, but not here. Present, and yet connected to something else beyond. The cadence of my voice shifted and insights flowed from the stream of the unconscious with ease.

That day I learned that the tarot is a gateway into the archetypal realm, a psychic portal that allows you to descend to the unconscious and to receive what flows from it readily.

The art of reading the cards must be squarely situated in this truth, for it schools us in the language and power of symbols—how they move us beyond conscious states and into the depths.

I also realized that my ability to do this was reinforced by the learning I had been engaged in: pulling apart the system of tarot, its structures and patterns, its images and feel. Becoming a fluent tarot reader was the merging of a strong educational base with the ease of the diviner. This month, I seek to guide you through a similar path in The Art of Tarot Interpretation.

~ Welcome to The Oracle, a monthly divination to open the archetypal field through a blend of tarot and dreamwork ~

I’ve long been drawn to intuitive practices and modalities that help one commune with the depths. I think it’s in my nature—I’m an INFJ, and since consciousness blossomed within, I’ve felt that there is more to life than what meets the eye. Concrete reality dissolves in the face of the unconscious and its mysterious expressions. Powerful dreams, psychic sight, and visions of sudden knowing have affirmed that the veil between worlds is indeed permeable.

At the age of 14 or so, I had my first tarot reading. The cards always entranced me; there was something about their strange yet familiar symbols that drew me in. Admittedly, in those early days, I didn’t understand the cards well. The Empress showed up often, and I felt fearful, wondering if somehow motherhood would find me earlier than I desired. The reader tsked, saying perhaps I would be giving form to some creative endeavor, not a physical child.

In retrospect, I think this was the archetypal presence of the Great Mother, a powerful force that would eventually bring a difficult but transformative reckoning 10 years later.

And, since symbolism is also the language of the unconscious, the use of the Tarot tends to activate the intuitive mind, or right-brain center.”

You see, too often we forget that the tarot emerged like a channeled dream from the roots of the collective unconscious. It is a language of symbols, of archetypal images. When we approach it through the day-world mind, trying to force it into strict categories, clear answers, and rationalizations, we undermine the bridge it creates between psychic layers of experience.

Tarot works most powerfully when it holds us in an archetypal constellation of imagistic wonder. Our inner and outer dynamics are expressed anew—in color, shape, and symbolic form. The grip of ego begins to loosen, and the incredible wisdom and insights that were lingering just under the surface begin to emerge.

For well over a decade, I’ve honed in on this approach to the cards. Situating them in the archetypal ground of the psyche, mining them for their psychological richness, it fast became one of the most impactful of my inner work tools.

This month, as we embark on a beginner’s path to meeting the tarot, let us hold this in mind:

The tarot profoundly awakens imagination; it connects us to the unconscious, so that we may better know ourselves and the path of individuation that is unfolding.

Jung’s writing is notoriously impenetrable and academically dense, but in Memories, Dreams, Reflections, we get a deeper sense of the man behind the theory, the psychic drives and images that fueled his tireless pursuits. It is the book I recommend all curious students begin with if they want to learn about Jungian psychology. I consider it the mythic origins of Jung, in his own words.

This month in The Artemisian’s membership, we embarked on a gentle read-along of the book. In our Solstice Gathering, I offered a breakdown of the chapters, covering the major themes of his explorations and how they tie back to core principles of Jung’s psychology and theories.

Jung’s life path, outwardly, is full of accolades, accomplishments, and grand meetings with impactful figures. His psychology is known far and wide, whether through intentional study or cultural osmosis—synchronicity, personality typology, archetypes, the shadow—these are just some of the key theories that make up the foundations of Jungian thought, ideas that permeate the collective.

And yet, for all these achievements and the great waves of influence Jung has made upon our world, he shares in his autobiography:

“In the end the only events in my life worth telling are those when the imperishable world irrupted into this transitory one. That is why I speak chiefly of inner experiences, amongst which I include my dreams and visions. These form the prima materia of my scientific work. They were the fiery magma out of which the stone that had to be worked was crystallized…Recollection of the outward events of my life has largely faded or disappeared. But my encounters with the “other” reality, my bouts with the unconscious, are indelibly engraved upon my memory. In that realm there has always been wealth in abundance, and everything else has lost importance by comparison.”

It’s not so much a denouncement of the outer events, but a recognition that for Jung, the aliveness of his inner world was paramount. It is the self-confession of a deeply introverted individual, that is, a psyche that is primed to attune towards the self and all that flourishes from within.

Remember, from a Jungian perspective, introversion does not determine sociability, shyness, or the desire for alone time1. Simply, it tells us where psychological energy moves, where our focus and attention naturally goes, how our cognitive functions are modified.

This month, as we embark on a gentle read-along of Jung’s autobiography, we recognize that for him, the experience of the unconscious—through its images, dreams, fantasies, symptoms and more—was the guiding star in his life. The genesis of his work, all these complex theories and empirical methods of observation, comes from acknowledging the power, autonomy and presence of the unconscious.

What relevance does this have for us? If we allow Jung’s journey to be an inspiration for our inner work, then we hold close that engaging the unconscious, in all the forms it so decides to present itself, as primary. Allow yourself to open to what flows from beyond the veil of consciousness. Give time to your dreams, inner experiences, moods, fantasies, images...for although it may be contained within, it is likely to have incredible relevance to all that you are building in outer life.

Keep in mind, reading Memories, Dreams, Reflections is a recommendation but not a requirement this month. My greatest hope is that this will spark some curiosity into one of the most accessible of Jung’s texts that we have. In our Solstice Gathering, I will present further on the main themes of the book and how they relate to core Jungian principles. We’ll also have a chance for group discussion and reflections on the book!

As part of this month’s inner work theme — Nightmares & Nigredo — I went live to offer guidance and archetypal insight on nightmares, and to answer some dreamwork questions.

Despite lots of writing, workshops and theory on dreamwork here at The Artemisian, I often feel it’s most impactful to see the art of dream interpretation in practice. There’s so much nuance and depth that goes into the work, and I hope that the demonstrations today bring clarity, insight, or spark some curiosity to pay attention to your own dreams.
