The Heroine’s Quest series is officially underway! Our first workshop explored the myth of Psyche & Eros, which many tend to only view as a tale of romantic love gone awry.

Though the relationship between Psyche & Eros is important, we considered how her sisters and the great underworld goddess Persephone play a more central role to her development and transformations—a perspective I find rich and provocative (inspired by mythologist and scholar Christine Downing).

Viewing Psyche’s story from this angle places the center of focus and energy of the myth squarely in the archetypes of the feminine, which is one of the hallmarks of the heroine’s journey.

The myth of Psyche and Eros has been lauded as a classic love story. It has all the elements of a complex romantic tale, so most of the attention has been focused solely on the lovers. Many psychological interpretations remain there, unpacking what it means to grow through romantic relationship—through ecstasy, projection, attraction, and tribulation.

Is the entanglement between Psyche and Eros the true driver of individuation? Let’s take a look at a short summary of the myth with this question in mind:

Where might you identify the initiating moment that sets off Psyche’s journey?

• Is it her god-like beauty that draws the ire of Aphrodite?

• Is it Eros as deceiver and lover?

• Is it the set of tasks (which eventually takes her to the underworld and to Persephone)?

Scholar, author, and professor of mythology, Christine Downing (who is perhaps one of my favorite modern interpertors of myth), offers a different way to view Psyche’s story:

“I have come to see, it is the interactions among sisters that instigate the heroine’s journey toward self, toward psyche. This story in no way sentimentalizes sisterhood: Psyche’s sisters are envious and cruel—but they push her in the way her soul requires (whereas Eros would happily have kept her in the dark).”

Psyche’s Sisters: Reimagining the Meaning of Sisterhood

Before reading Downing’s work, I’d yet to come across an interpretation that centers the moment of initiation in the realm of sisterhood. Often, Psyche’s sisters are grouped into the classic trope: jealous siblings—the dark side of the personality—who only seek to deny, strip, and annihilate the vital essence of the heroine.

The power of sorority is subordinated to the power of romantic love. Yet, Eros is a lover who, if his will won out, would have kept Psyche unconscious. She would only know him through illusion and projection, a condition most of us are entrenched in when we enter into relationship with another.

There has to be something to break the fantasy, to create enough doubt or uncertainty so we get curious enough to investigate what is hidden in shadow. For Psyche, that is the moment her sisters question her secret-lover, when they provide the true first task: figure out who he is.

Armed with the symbols of discernment and the light of consciousness, Psyche enters their chamber, and all else flows from there…

Now, let’s turn towards The Oracle, to the tarot cards and practices that deepen our exploration of these themes.

Waite describes the card as, “the decline of a matter, or that a matter which has been thought to be important is really of slight consequence--either for good or evil.” Each cup, still perfectly upright, still full to the brim with something that was once felt as valuable, has lost its meaning.

The Heroine’s Quest:
Myths and Fairy Tales of Individuation

The heroine is a symbol of the individuating impulse within us all — a psychic force that seeks wholeness through descent, remembrance, reclamation, and conscious participation in life. She wears many faces across myth and fairy tale, journeying into dark forests, falling into enchanted sleep, contending with great sorceresses, and eating poisoned fruit.

We will draw upon the stories of Psyche and Eros, Bluebeard, and Rapunzel, tracing patterns of awakening, initiation, and transformation that appear across their tales. Our studies will be anchored by a monthly workshop and further supported by discussion threads, and the Oracle (a divination offering blending tarot and inner work practices).

Psyche & Eros

Sisterhood & Trials of Initiation

In July, we will explore the myth of Psyche and Eros as an initiation into the mysteries of life and death through sisterhood and confrontation with the Great Mother archetype. Following Psyche’s story, we’ll consider how the soul awakens through relationship, impossible trials, and descent to the underworld. Her journeying will inspire our inner work and reveal distinct pathways for navigating the challenges of individuation and the transformations they require.

Our focus includes:

Revelation & the Forbidden Psyche

In August, we will explore the fairy tale of Bluebeard as a confrontation with the dark aspects of the psyche and the destructive forces hidden within it. Through the symbol of the forbidden chamber, the tale reveals how we unconsciously participate in self-annihilating and dismembering psychic patterns. As a path towards transformation, we will contemplate the key and the heroine’s curiosity as a force of revelation, helping us to identify the inner resources that will support the establishment of psychic authority in our own lives.

Our focus includes:

• Exploring the forbidden chamber as a symbol of shadow and psychic darkness

• Following the key and the heroine’s curiosity as pathways to revelation and inner knowing

• Developing the discernment and psychic authority needed to confront and transform destructive patterns

Rapunzel

Psychic Captivity & the Return to Life

In September, we will explore the fairy tale of Rapunzel as a story of psychic captivity and the longing for liberation. Drawing from Jungian analyst Donald Kalsched’s work on the archetypal self-care system, we will consider how the soul retreats into protective structures that, overtime, become limiting and persecutory. Through the symbolism of Rapunzel’s song, we will uncover how to work with the psyche’s enduring creative spirit and the return to life.

Our focus includes:

• Exploring the tower as a symbol of psychic defense, isolation, and captivity

• Understanding the sorceress as both protector and persecutor within the psyche

• Following Rapunzel’s song as a pathway to creative expression, embodiment, and participation in life

Meet the court cards as archetypal personalities, as complexes and psychic configurations that offer a wealth of opportunity for deepening individuation.

Hi everyone!

Despite reading and teaching the tarot for over 15 years, I too find the court cards some of the trickiest to work with in the deck. It wasn’t until I began to view them as psychological configurations—as clusters of psychic energy, drives, qualities, attitudes, and approaches in personified form—that it truly opened up for me.

After that, whenever I drew a court card, I felt myself drawn into an expansive and dynamic inner work experience. The figures of the court would reach out, sharing words of wisdom, reflecting areas of life I was in, highlighting aspects of personality, and offering pathways for development.

This approach informs how I teach them now, alongside a Jungian and archetypal framework that further grounds the cards in psychological reality and theory. The class is now available for replay. I hope it helps you on your tarot reading journey :)

The court cards of the tarot, the royal figures that preside over the Minor Arcana, are some of the trickiest in the deck. It’s curious, really. You’d think we would find them more relatable than the archetypally concentrated Major Arcana or the situational pips. And though we may feel an affinity or interest in a particular court card (a significator), the most common experience when we draw them in a reading is confusion and uncertainty.

In this approach, court cards become an active psychological force that helps us to explore inner and outer reality through their archetypal perspectives. Instead of beginning with questions like, “Who does the Knight of Swords remind me of?” or, “What relevance does my King of Pentacles-like boss have to this reading?”, we begin from a more vital place: “What is my relationship to the Page of Cups’ themes where new depths of feeling and emotional capacity are emerging? ” Or, “How can I approach this situation with the Queen of Wand’s fiery charisma, fierce devotion, and inspired movement?”

In this form, the court cards and their interpretations have many shades of potential and meanings. Sometimes, it does extend into the outer world, to individuals in our lives who embody the unique qualities of the court. More often than not, though, it turns the focus and inquiry inward, to exploring the vast landscape of our psychological inner workings.

If the court cards are the royalty of the Minor Arcana, then the Empress and Emperor can be viewed as the ruling monarchs of the Majors. Where the court cards are bound into the limitations of their suit and rank, the Empress and Emperor are boundary-less, encompassing a greater totality of archetypal and psychological experience.

Synchronicity is a mind-bending concept, asking us to consider how dynamics that should be squarely internal (like a dream, thought, image, feeling) can be reflected outside of ourselves.

A synchronicity may be dramatic and striking, like dreaming of an event before it comes to pass. Or, it can be subtle and inviting, like a recurring theme we keep hearing about that seems full of meaning.

Oftentimes, we experience these synchronicities without a framework to understand, contextualize, or meaningfully work with them afterward. This workshop remedies that, providing an educational foundation of synchronicity from a Jungian perspective. We examine how synchronicity tends to appear during times of emotional intensity and deep inner work, as well as their link to archetypes and the unus mundus.

Synchronicity is another Jungian term that pervades the collective conscious sphere, yet continues to hang in the shadows of our understanding. It’s often spoken about as striking moments we encounter in our daily lives, such as a repeating number we can’t stop seeing or an unusual sign that we are on the right path. But the Jungian idea is much richer, much stranger, and more elusive.

Simply defined, synchronicity is a moment of meaningful connection, where an event in the outside world coincides with a psychological state of mind, with no detectable causality at play.

Synchronicity is a concept that squarely situated Jung as a metaphysician, a role he constantly denied and side-stepped throughout his lengthy career. In his later years, emboldened by his unending excavation of psychological phenomena, he put forth his theory:

“Since psyche and matter are contained in one and the same world, and moreover are in continuous contact with one another and ultimately rest on irrepresentable, transcendental factors, it is not only possible but fairly probable, even, that psyche and matter are two different aspects of one and the same thing. The synchronicity phenomena point, it seems to me, in this direction, for they show that the nonpsychic can behave like the psychic, and vice versa, without there being any causal connection between them...”

Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle

Synchronicity is a commentary on the nature of reality, that at some point beyond the seemingly disparate worlds of inner and outer, psyche and matter, the realms are actually one. For this reason, they can mirror each other, materializing in both our psychological conditions and in the external world at the same time, or relatively close together. The most critical aspect of the synchronicity relationship is an undeniable sense of meaning and connection.

Synchronicity arrives to break open the fabric of existence, allowing us to pierce into the veil of the unus mundus. These experiences can be astounding, challenging our notions of what we thought was real or possible (for an exceptionally striking example in my life, see the article The Hounds of Diana). But not all synchronicities arrive in this manner. Some are subtle, unfolding around us like a gentle message from the beyond.

We oft speak of synchronicity as something that happens to us, something we become aware of as it arises in our lives. But one thing we should keep in mind is that we can invoke synchronicity; we can tap into the deep layer of unified reality. One of the simplest ways to do this is to practice the art of divination.

The Oracle, this blended offering of tarot and dreamwork, is exactly that. By focusing on a charged inner aspect (in this case, our monthly inner work theme, but it can also be a question or tension in life) and then drawing cards or incubating dream material, we open ourselves to the cosmic mysteries of the unconscious, creating a portal to see it reflected in the outer world.

In the case of the tarot, it’s the random draw of the cards, a material item flush with symbols, that seems to uncannily mirror our inner state. In the case of dreamwork, we appeal to the unconscious for images and commentary on our lives that we can then trace into outer experience. The divination and the activation of synchronicity hold us in an archetypal constellation of wonder and intrigue.

Hekate — great goddess of the night, mistress of the crossroads, keeper of dark and magical mysteries, she is the focus and guide for our studies and inner work this month.

Of all the Greek mythic figures, she seems to exhibit a unique kind of draw for the modern psyche, especially those navigating spiritual and psychological inner work. It’s curious, for as Titaness, Hekate is older and more primordial than her Olympian brethren. Further, she lacks the large body of mythic stories that many other gods have. Rather than narrative allure, it is Hekate in practice, Hekate in ritual, Hekate as a living archetypal force that truly captures our imagination.

She is, however, most famously associated as an alternative psychopomp in the story of Persephone’s abduction. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, it is the sun and moon, the heavens and the chthonic depths through Helios and Hekate, who hear Persephone’s cries as she is drawn into the underworld. Torches bared in hand, she guides Demeter to her long-lost daughter, and eventually becomes companion to the Underworld Queen.

Then Hekatē approached them, the one with the splendid headband.

And she welcomed back the daughter of holy Demeter with many embraces.

And from that day forward, the Lady [Hekatē] became her [Persephone’s] attendant and substitute queen.

— Homeric Hymn to Demeter

From the hymn, we can gather that Hekate is seen as a sort of secondary underworld authority. Where Hades and Persephone rule explicitly, Hekate rules from the shadows. Thus we see her worshipped and honored in all sorts of dark and liminal spaces. As archetypal presence, she captures these marginal, borderline areas of life, acting as Goddess of:

• The waning and dark phases of the moon

• Thresholds, doorways, and crossroads

• Magic, witchcraft, and occult arts

• The underworld and death

In this, Hekate dissolves rigid boundaries of archetypal categorization. She rules many realms and is ambivalent as both helper and provoker.

For our studies this month, we will explore the goddess in these many forms: as Great Mother, Sorceress, Psychopomp, and Crone. We will reflect on her symbols: the key, the crossroads, the torch, and the dog.

But first, we invoke Hekate in our divinatory work, appealing to her unconscious wisdom. Hekate is calling, through the images of the tarot and in the symbols of our dreams.

Elemental themes and symbols are some of the most prevalent in the dreamscape. The quaternity of elements are a grounding force, both within the psyche and the outer world. To be alive is to interact with them: the air you breathe, the water you drink, the fire you cook with, the earth you walk upon. Through fire, water, air, and earth, we come to know the fabric of reality and the mysteries of the natural world.

And so, it is not too surprising that the elements crop up in our dreams over and over again. In all expressions—from nurturing to disastrous, from in the background to front and center—elemental symbols emerge from the unconscious, drawing our attention with their wonder. If you cast your awareness back through the years, can you remember an elemental dream of your own?

Fire may arise as a funeral pyre, an erupting volcano spilling forth lava, as a gentle campfire that warms you through.

Water may arise as babbling brook, catastrophic floods, or swimming in a calm river.

Air may arise as flying through the open sky, a tornado crashing through, as the gentle wind in your hair.

Earth may arise as a bountiful harvest, a rock laden labyrinth, or the splitting of the land in an earthquake.

There is a wealth of classic Jungian and depth psychological perspectives to reference when interpreting these dreams. Many of those takes can be found littered through the classes and offerings here at The Artemisian.

But as one devoted to the archetypal mysteries of the psyche, I tend to branch out to other symbolic systems to enrich and amplify my inner work. Themes intensify and new clarity awakens when you start to see the threads of connection across modalities. It’s fascinating and expansive, reminding one that the depths of the collective unconscious echo through all expressions of culture and humanity.

This month, we orient to alchemy to make sense of our elemental dreams, for in their toiling, the alchemists crafted a wealth of psychologically enriching material around the themes and properties of fire, water, air, and earth. They had specific processes—called operations—aligned to each element, which blended their concrete and symbolic properties.

For example: water was utilized and represented in an operation called solutio, where the prima materia was dissolved or submerged in a liquid solution. Sinking into the depths, the structures of the material surrendered to the great body of water. This was a destructive process, an irreversible and necessary dissolution that paved the way for eventual rebirth.

Solutio is reflected anywhere we meet water in our dreams—like swimming in the ocean or facing a towering tidal wave. It calls our attention to the psychic forces that are attempting to reshape us through submergence. The dream symbols provide us with an image of where we are in relationship to these transformative elements. Our capacity to see it with alchemical eyes gives us a new ground of meaning and action to facilitate the process along.

Elemental Guidance for Inner Work & Dreams

IX of Wands — Losing the Spark of Life

Wands explore the libidinal layer of experience, the animating force of life that moves from deep within the psyche all the way to the outer world. We find its gifts and inspirations through out much of the suit, from the fast-paced excitement of the VIII of Wands to the bold and fiery attitudes of the Queen of Wands.

Yet the Oracle reminds us this month that fire is not always so kind. The incredible effort required to sustain the spark of life is no easy feat. Towards the end of the Minor Arcana cycle, we see the cost: exhaustion, loss of energy, and the psychic fallout of endurance and passion.

The IX of Wands is an image of a once roaring blaze burned down to embers. This is a common scenario for many of us committed to earnest inner work. Our enthusiasm may have kicked off the journey, but the toll it takes upon us cannot be ignored. Fire is a hungry beast, always demanding more, more, more. Evolution through the incendiary path means we must learn to mediate these different levels, to become a master of fire and its many expressions.

Search your dreams for similar images: a dying fire, smoldering remains of a house burnt to a crisp, attempts to ignite a fire, or light a match. The invitation here is to create boundaries that act as both container and fuel. Like the figure in the IX of Wands, we can intentionally construct an environment that holds overwhelm at bay while building up the resources to ignite our inner spark once more. Be wary of smothering this vulnerable flame, it needs a careful hand.

King of Cups — A Steady Center Amidst Fluctuations

Steady amongst the waves, a ground in choppy waters — the King of Cups is a strange and somewhat paradoxical image in the tarot. He’s no Neptunian leader immersed within the sea, but a center of stability in the midst of water’s constant fluctuations.

Cups famously represent the ever-changing currents of life, the emotional swirls and relational tides. These aspects are in constant motion, always shifting their form and presence depending on the psychic weather. As King, this card reflects a sort of dominion over water, that sovereignty has been hard-won from plundering the depths and emerging renewed.

Keep an eye out for the King’s presence in your dreams: fishing, navigating a boat in the midst of a storm, treading water, swimming with confidence, sitting on a rock amongst the waves. Engagement with water this month brings uncertainty in its dissolutions, but an enduring center awaits to help you weather the intensity.

Ace of Swords — Sky-High Clarity Arrives

Though there’s no stone to pull from, the Ace of Swords represents a similar thematic moment to the Arthurian legend: will you claim authority and power by seizing your destined path? The crowned blade in the sky is an image of victory and assurance, it is the expansive perspective needed to tackle all the challenges that we find in the suit of Swords.

From this moment on, the cards that follow seem to cut us down, pierce us to the heart, and oppress us with their intensity. Swords are charged with facing the harsh realities of life and the distortions of consciousness. Each step towards the X brings another painful mirror we must look into if we wish to truly know ourselves.

The Ace of Swords is a boon on this harrowing individuation journey. But even it comes with a catch. When you accept the role, when you step into self-leadership, you can no longer let your woes and troubles weigh you down. You must scale into sky-high awareness and acknowledge your role within the process of becoming. Grow lighter and broader, see each challenge as an opportunity to sharpen perception. Such personal responsibility hones your capacity for discernment and clear thinking, for truth-laden communications ringing with royal decree.

The suit of swords may be demanding your attention if your dreamscapes feature: flying and soaring through the air, scaling mountaintops, walking up ladders or staircases, gale force winds or gentle breezes, communications and striking cloud features in the heavens. The air element may be harsh but it enlivens and deepens the spirit. Listen to the whispers on the wind and see what secrets it has to offer.

IV of Pentacles — The Light and Shadow of Limitation

Prudent, measured, cautious, considering — such qualities of the IV of Pentacles fuels its polarizing interpretations. Is the figure clutching resources and bounty out of fear or wisdom? I always pause when this card comes up, for its easy to fall into the trap of seeing it only through Saturnian eyes.

Earth is lush, bountiful and providing. But a true Pentacles individual knows that eventually, seasons turn. What was once in full bloom soon begins to wither and rot. These patterns are not isolated within the natural world, they echo through the entire fabric of existence. One can partake in the harvest with Dionysian delight, but they must also know when to temper their actions and slow down.

The IV of Pentacles is an opportunity to see the light and shadow in our limitations. For inner work, the earth element can become the fixed position that finally allows you to ground, to breathe, to relax. It’s the calming of the nervous system and the easing within a body that has felt caught in cycles of over-vigilance. But it can also be limitations and attachments that have become overly ossified and rigid. Defensive posturing that traps you within an earthen prison, conservatism that chokes the expansive puer spirit. Beware of earth, the Mother’s gentle arms can quickly become those of death.

Consider multi-faceted earthen dream symbols: food you eat that becomes poisonous, or ingested poison that heals, houses or structures that feel welcoming or prison-like, earthy environments that shimmer with mystery and fear, defending one’s treasures or digging for gold. The earth element, it is said, is both womb and tomb. Hold this tension and a new ground of life may arise from its joining.

There was a time in my early studies of tarot where I felt quite mystified by the whole process. Although there was always an allure and great sense of potency when I picked up a deck, I typically ran up against frustrating limitations.

The reliance I had on the guidebook and looking up definitions…

Drawing a blank as I attempted to gather insight and meaning from a reading…

A sense of overwhelm when there were too many cards to interpret…

I always felt as if I was lacking, wondering when I would arrive at a place of comfort and ease. Then, one fateful day, a friend of mine asked me to pull some cards and read for them. Diving head first, I agreed, and found myself staring down a spread of cards and a rising panic in my chest.

I took a deep breath and just began talking. I entered into this strange liminal state. Here, but not here. Present, and yet connected to something else beyond. The cadence of my voice shifted and insights flowed from the stream of the unconscious with ease.

That day I learned that the tarot is a gateway into the archetypal realm, a psychic portal that allows you to descend to the unconscious and to receive what flows from it readily.

The art of reading the cards must be squarely situated in this truth, for it schools us in the language and power of symbols—how they move us beyond conscious states and into the depths.

I also realized that my ability to do this was reinforced by the learning I had been engaged in: pulling apart the system of tarot, its structures and patterns, its images and feel. Becoming a fluent tarot reader was the merging of a strong educational base with the ease of the diviner. This month, I seek to guide you through a similar path in The Art of Tarot Interpretation.
